American League 4, National League 2
MVP: Barry Bonds, AL
Winning Pitcher: Brad Lidge, AL (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Ben Sheets, NL (0-1)
Save: none
Homerun(s): B.Wilkerson (1st), A.Beltre (1st), B.Bonds (1st)
PETCO Park, San Diego 7/12/2005
Barry Bonds had the big bomb at Petco Park as the National League All-Stars lost a
heartbreaker to the American League All-Stars by the score of 4 to 2 in the 2005
SPIBL Midsummer Classic.

The American League had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
using 2 hits.  Mike Lowell (MIL) opened up the inning nicely when he banged out a
single.  Barry Bonds (OAK) was next and he cracked a two-run walk-off homerun into
the right field bleachers resulting in an exciting win for the AL and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans.  The AL All-Stars had 10 hits in the
game and the NL All-Stars had 7.

Bonds was awarded the game's Most Valuable Player award for his late-inning heroics.

Brad Lidge (CLE) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning.  Ben
Sheets (DET) suffered the loss in relief.  He gave up 2 runs and 2 hits without
retiring a batter.

Sheets has not enjoyed his two SPIBL all-star appearances thus far.  He has been the
losing pitcher in both the 2004 and 2005 All-Star games.  In his interview after the
game, he replied, "I gave it my best effort out there.  It was just an honor to be
here representing the Outlaws organization."

After Flatirons ace, Curt Schilling, put down the NL in order to start the game, the
American League got the scoring started early with a two-run blast by Adrian Beltre
(OAK) off NL starter, Victor Zambrano (KCN).  The National League answered right
back with single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, including a solo shot by DH Brad
Wilkerson (DET).

Both managers agreed that it was a well-played exciting game for both players and
fans alike.  AL manager, Alan Lecher (CHA), said after the game, "Great finish!  It
was nice to have a guy like Barry on our side.  I just wish I could've gotten all my
players in the game.  They all deserved it, no doubt."

Notable pitching performances include Oliver Perez (TOR), who struck out hometown
favorite Ivan Rodriguez (SDB) with the bases loaded in the 3rd.  Cory Lidle (SDB)
then delighted the crowd by striking out Mark Teixeira (KCN) with runners on the
corners and one out in the 4th inning to keep the game tied 2-2.

Matt Clement (PIT) had a key outing for the AL in the 6th inning.  With runners on
2nd and 3rd base with only one out, he induced pinch hitter Sammy Sosa (KCN) to pop
out and Victor Martinez (FLA) lined out to first to end the scoring threat.

Jason Schmidt (PHN) and B.J. Ryan (ATL) combined to get out of a huge jam for the NL
in the bottom of the 6th.  After Todd Helton (CHA) led off with a double, Ivan
Rodriguez followed with a single to put runners at the corners.  Pinch hitter Aaron
Miles (PIT) then grounded out to shortstop and Cesar Izturis (SDB) struck out. After
an intentional walk to pinch hitter Gary Sheffield (PIT), Ryan induced Ichiro Suzuki
(MIL) to ground out and end the inning.

Helton was the game's top hitter, going 2 for 2 with a double and two walks.
